A. alkyl halides
B. alkyl amine
C. alkanes
D. alkynes
¨ When alcohol reacts with phosphorus halides such as phosphorus trichloride (PCl3) or phosphorus pentachloride (PCl5), it gives alkyl halides. The reaction is known as the Dehydration of alcohols or the Lucas test. In this reaction, the hydroxyl group (-OH) of the alcohol is replaced by a halogen (-Cl or -Br) to form an alkyl halide. The reaction involves the formation of an intermediate alkyl phosphate ester, which is then hydrolyzed by the halide ion present in the reaction mixture to form the alkyl halide. The formation of the alkyl halide can be detected by performing a simple precipitation test or by using infrared spectroscopy.
