Which one of the following compounds usually smells like garlic ?

A. P2O3
B. P2O5
C. H3PO3
D. All have same smell

  • P2O3 is a white crystalline solid that has a pungent and garlic-like odor due to the presence of small amounts of phosphine (PH3). This compound is highly reactive and is used in the manufacture of various chemicals, including flame retardants and plasticizers.
  • Phosphorous acid (H3PO3) also has a similar garlic-like odor due to the presence of phosphine, but it is not as strong as the odor of P2O3.
