A. Cathode rays
B. X-rays
C. Canal rays
D. Alpha rays
¨ Canal rays were discovered by Eugen Goldstein in 1886, and they led to the discovery of the proton. Canal rays are positively charged particles that move towards the cathode in a cathode ray tube, and they were later identified as protons.
¨ Ernest Rutherford is known for his contribution to the discovery of the nucleus of an atom and the proton. Rutherford in 1917 conducted the famous gold foil experiment in which he bombarded thin gold foil with alpha particles and observed the deflection of the alpha particles. This led to the discovery of the positively charged nucleus at the center of an atom and the existence of protons.
