¨ Grignard reagent is an organometallic compound that is formed by the reaction of an alkyl halide (or aryl halide) with magnesium metal in anhydrous ether. It is named after its discoverer, French chemist Victor Grignard.
¨ When a Grignard reagent reacts with carbon dioxide (CO2), it forms a carboxylic acid. This reaction is useful in organic synthesis for the preparation of carboxylic acids. The reaction proceeds via nucleophilic addition of the Grignard reagent to the carbonyl group of carbon dioxide, followed by protonation of the resulting intermediate by water.
