¨ Alkyl halides are considered to be very reactive compounds towards nucleophiles because they have an electrophilic carbon and a good leaving group. The halogen atom is a good leaving group because it can stabilize the negative charge that is left behind after the carbon-halogen bond is broken. This electrophilic carbon is attacked by nucleophiles in substitution reactions, leading to the formation of new carbon-nucleophile bonds.
