¨ The concept of the atom as an indivisible particle was first proposed by the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus. The word “atom” comes from the Greek word “atomos,” which means indivisible. However, later experiments and discoveries revealed that atoms are indeed divisible into smaller subatomic particles such as protons, neutrons, and electrons.
