On increasing the temperature, the rate of reaction increases mainly because_________________?

A. The activation energy of the reaction increases
B. Concentration of the reacting molecules increases
C. Collision frequency increases
D. None of these

¨       Increasing the temperature increases the kinetic energy of the molecules involved in the reaction, which in turn increases the frequency and energy of collisions between these molecules. This increased collision frequency leads to a higher probability of successful collisions (i.e. those with sufficient energy and correct orientation to break existing bonds and form new ones) and therefore an increase in the rate of the reaction.

¨       The activation energy of the reaction remains the same, but a higher proportion of the reacting molecules now possess the energy required to overcome this activation energy barrier and participate in the reaction.
